Literacy, the Common Core, and Technology

Two things seem headed inexorably toward the classrooms of California: the Common Core standard, and Apple’s ubiquitous iPad tablet computer. We all know about the adoption of the Common Core State Standards and the implementation timeline of 2014. Are you ready for the change? Are there possibilities for using new technologies like the iPad to help us prepare for the arrival of the new standards? We aim to find out in the coming months.

The NCWP is forming an inquiry team for 2012-13 focused on using technology to explore the literacy elements in California’s Common Core English Language Arts standards. The team will consist of up to 15 NCWP Teacher-Consultants (you must have attended one of the NCWP’s Invitational Summer Institutes to be eligible to participate), and will meet approximately 10 times between June 2012 and June 2013. The nuts and bolts:

  • Summer meetings: Friday, June 8, 9 am – 3 pm; Friday, June 29, 9 am – 3 pm
  • School year meetings: Third Thursdays of September, October, November, January, February, March, April, May
  • Participants must commit to attending 90% of the meetings
  • Stipend: $1,000

Participants will be expected to bring an iPad to each meeting. The stipend is intended to offset the cost of purchase. If you’re interested, please fill out the application linked below. Please be aware that this is a competitive program; we anticipate far more applicants than we can fund, so be complete and detailed as you fill out the application.

Registration for this program is now full. Thanks for your interest in the NCWP!
