Beginning Teacher Design Institute: Summer 2019


This summer (2019), we are launching a new invitational Summer Institute for early career teachers across grade levels and disciplines: The Beginning Teacher Design Institute. Teachers–from kindergarten to college–who are in their first five years of teaching are invited to apply for one of the fifteen openings. Teachers should come from a variety of disciplines–math to social studies–as we believe that writing is a part of every area of study. Our goal is to connect rural teachers in our network at the beginning of what we hope is a long career in education.

Who should apply?

Any teacher (k-college) who wants to think about the teaching of writing and designing support for other new teachers in our service area.

What will we do?

At the center of our beliefs about professional development is that teachers are the best teachers of other teachers. For this reason, teachers in the design institute will read new professional texts, write together, share problems of practice, and create the kinds of support they want as new educators. New teachers are perfectly positioned to know the particular challenges that can be part of the first few years. Most mornings will begin with teachers sharing a practice from his or her classroom. The afternoons will typically be time to read, write, and design together. Following the institute, teachers can lead other professional development in local schools if interested.

Who is facilitating?

The team of facilitators cover the range of grade levels and contexts: Robbin Jack is a high school teacher and literacy coach from Shasta Unified; Alicia McCauley is a 1st grade teacher at Boulder Creek School who also founded the Vigilante Kindness organization and spends part of her time teaching in Uganda; Kyra Mello teaches at Yuba Community College and has a long history of student support work; and Kim Jaxon teaches at Chico State and is the director of the NCWP. The team will be joined throughout the institute by other veteran teachers who will facilitate a variety of workshops related to the teaching of writing.

Dates and location?

  • Friday, March 15: Applications due.
  • Saturday, April 27, 10:00am-2:00pm: Pre-Institute gathering on the Chico State campus (lunch provided)
  • Institute takes place June 17-20 (Mon-Thur), June 24-27 (Mon-Thur), and July 1-2 (Mon & Tues) from 9:30-3:00 each day on Chico State campus.
  • Participants must be able to attend all days including the pre-institute gathering
  • Reunion in fall 2019 TBA

Are there other details I should know?

  • Participants will receive a modest stipend for participating ($500).
  • We can provide travel reimbursement for participants who are driving more than 100 miles to attend. We may also be able to offer housing options on the Chico State campus, so please indicate this interest on the application.
  • Professional development units can be purchased.
  • All materials, including current professional books for participants, are covered by NCWP.
