We all have so many stories to tell about our teaching, but too little time to capture them and too few chances to really refine our words in a collaborative, friendly environment. As at least a partial remedy for that dearth of opportunities, the NCWP is hosting a Writing and Leadership Retreat in July.

Did you figure out some brilliant way to help students revise their writing? Or design a new and interesting way to help with comprehension of difficult texts? Maybe you came up with an assignment that engages reluctant writers, or had an epiphany about the kinds of materials that help your students develop their voices. If you had something interesting happen in your teaching that you think other educators should hear about, please consider writing your story.

One of the best ways for teachers to be seen as active contributors to educational leadership is through publication. The Writing and Leadership Retreat will give you time and space for writing, along with smart, insightful colleagues who can help you as you craft your piece.

Dates: July 13-15

Location: TBA

Stipend: $250

Apply Today!

Two things seem headed inexorably toward the classrooms of California: the Common Core standard, and Apple’s ubiquitous iPad tablet computer. We all know about the adoption of the Common Core State Standards and the implementation timeline of 2014. Are you ready for the change? Are there possibilities for using new technologies like the iPad to help us prepare for the arrival of the new standards? We aim to find out in the coming months.

The NCWP is forming an inquiry team for 2012-13 focused on using technology to explore the literacy elements in California’s Common Core English Language Arts standards. The team will consist of up to 15 NCWP Teacher-Consultants, and will meet approximately 10 times between June 2012 and June 2013. The nuts and bolts:

Summer meetings: Friday, June 8, 9 am – 3 pm; Friday, June 29, 9 am – 3 pm

School year meetings: Third Thursdays of September, October, November, January, February, March, April, May

Participants must commit to attending 90% of the meetings

Stipend: $1,000

Participants will be expected to bring an iPad to each meeting. The stipend is intended to offset the cost of purchase. If you’re interested, please fill out the application linked below. Please be aware that this is a competitive program; we anticipate far more applicants than we can fund, so be complete and detailed as you fill out the application.

The NCWP is proud to participate in the Digital Learning Day on Feb 1, 2012, via a number of activities. Teacher-consultants from NCWP are engaging in new and exciting technologies to support student learning and literacy. We are celebrating the Digital Learning Day by trying new digital ideas with our students, opening our classrooms to community members, and presenting the results of our efforts to legislators and other education stakeholders.

The Digital Learning Day is a nationwide effort spearheaded by the Alliance for Excellent Education, with partners from a wide variety of American Culture (Google, the Carnegie Corporation of NY, the Young Adult Library Services Association, and Scholastic). The statewide leadership for the effort has been undertaken by the California Writing Project.

At the CWP’s Digital Learning Day event, “Writing Our Future: A Celebration of Students’ Digital Learning & Writing,” Teacher-Consultants from NCWP will be presenting on a variety of topics:

Digital tools and inquiry (Tom Fox)

Science, inquiry, and literacy (Suzanne Linebarger)

Blogging with high school students (Lou Buran)

Multimodal compositions and student engagement (Rochelle Ramay and Peter Kittle)

Teacher-Consultants from the Norther California Writing Project have played a central role at Digital Is, a website of resources for teachers interested in teaching literacy in a technology-rich environment. Digital Is is a collaborative effort of the National Writing Project and the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Initiative. The name of the site derives from an acknowledgment that our culture has taken a turn to the digital, and debates about whether computer-mediated instruction belongs in schools should simply be seen as moot because, well, digital is. The website welcomes contributions from teachers who have success stories to share, but also welcomes provocations about the interactions of technology and education.

Among the collections and resources from the NCWP:
