Teaching Writing in Northern California
The Northern California Writing Project is pleased to offer a one-week summer program for public school grade teachers. The program is specifically designed around the context of teaching writing in Northern California. Participants will receive books, articles, and binders supporting their work as they develop effective teaching practices. Teacher-consultants from the Northern California Writing Project will conduct all sessions. Two professional development units are available from CSU, Chico for $60/unit.
Common questions teachers bring to the institute:
- What kinds of assignments can engage my students and make them better writers and thinkers?
- What is the role of writing in my classroom?
- How can I motivate students when I’m expected to focus primarily on raising test scores?
- Am I abandoning the kinds of lessons kids care most about?
- How can I find time to cover all of the State Content Standards without sacrificing the quality of my teaching?
- How can I use rubrics, assessments, and student work to improve instruction?
Daily sessions will include but aren’t limited to the following:
- Exploring the crucial and diverse roles of reading and writing in content-specific classrooms
- Looking at integrating content-standards in ways that make sense
- Examining the use of assessments as tools for improving student performance
- Sharing effective teaching practices
- Reading and discussing current educational articles
- Writing about concerns and issues in our classrooms
