Teaching Writing in the 21st Century
Today’s Students, Today’s Standards
The Northern California Writing Project is pleased to offer a professional development inservice institute with a focus on developing on-going professional learning communities at the school site or district level. Teachers today face tremendous pressure to meet increasingly rigorous standards while supporting the diverse needs of Northern California’s student population. Everything from the issues faced by English Learners to the new literacies offered by technological innovations rest on the teacher’s shoulders, and this program is designed help teachers increase their ability to implement effective, inclusive, engaging strategies for teaching writing and reading across the curriculum. Participants will develop engaging writing assignments based on the district’s adopted materials and curricula, and will receive resources (articles, binders, etc.) supporting their work. Teacher-consultants from the Northern California Writing Project will present model lessons, facilitate sessions, and coordinate scheduling. Teachers will be active participants in the program design.
Goals and Outcomes
- Strategies for teaching English Learners across the curriculum
- Assessment tools and techniques that increase student achievement
- Successful strategies for increasing reading and writing competence across
- disciplines
- Approaches to using current technologies to scaffold academic literacy for all
- students
Topics will include, but aren’t limited to the following:
- Integrating writing into content-area standards in practical ways
- Utilizing current research on English Learners to design effective strategies for our
- students
- Exploring the crucial and diverse roles of reading and writing in content-specific
- classrooms
- Examining the use of assessments as tools for improving student performance
- Discovering ways to use technology to enhance student achievement and
- engagement
- Sharing effective teaching practices
- Reading and discussing current educational articles
Cost: $6,000 for 40 hours
Program design and dates are tailored to needs of each school/district
